New devices have been installed at the cafeteria of Hangzhou No.11 Middle School recently, which enable students to get their reserved set meals by standing in front of cameras and scanning their faces for just two seconds.
“Students had to present their canteen cards to get meals before, but we’ve noticed that some forget to bring the cards or even lose them. Facial recognition is the new function of Smart Canteen 3.0,” the school's vice president Zhang Guangchao said.
The school has upgraded their system by relating individuals’ photos and students’ ID numbers, which not only facilitates users but also gives parents information on their children’s health situation. “Parents could log on WeChat public account to check the students’ nutrition input once a week now from once a month before. They would know what nutrition to be added at home for better health,” said Zhang.
On top of that, the application of the latest gadgets could save 10 minutes for lunchtime, which means students can enjoy a longer lunch break.
At the same time, students are asked to take photos in different poses with different facial expressions, serious or smiling, to increase accuracy.
The school plans to launch facial recognition for attendance check the next step after the trial at canteen to save time and improve class management.
